India’s Sania Mirza and her doubles partner, the Swiss former World No. 1 Martina Hingis, reached their 36th overall, and third Grand Slam victory in a row today in Melbourne, winning the women’s doubles final.
Having already won Wimbledon, the US Open, and now the Australian Open, the triumphant pair are now going to focus on the French Open.
Sania Mirza and Hingis beat rival doubles team of the Czech pair Andrea Hlavackova and Lucie Hradecka in decisive 7-6, (7-1), 6-3 straight sets.
This is the fifth Australian Open title for Hingis, who is the holder of five Grand Slam titles. Sania Mirza won the mixed doubles of the Australian Open back in 2009, partnering with fellow Indian Mahesh Bhupati. She is also through to the mixed doubles semi finals, in which she will team up with Ivan Dodig.
Pakistani sports fans have been down in the dumps since last week, following disappointment on the cricket field. The national ‘bhabi’s’ triumph, won in collaboration with hot favourite Martina Hingis, will give them cause to rejoice.
