For the women’s doubles pair Sania Mirza and Martina Hingis, it’s been a perfect end to the last year and an ideal beginning to the new one.
The duo ended 2015 with an amazing 9 titles, including the US Open, Wimbledon and end of the year WTA Final. Whether in Indian Wells, Charleston, England or Beijing, China, the two players have clicked as a dream-team. On Friday night, their win at Sydney was their 30th in a row. The record for most consecutive wins by a doubles team in women’s tennis is held by Jana Novotna and Helena Sukova, who scored an awesome 44 back-to-back victories. It looks like Mirza and Hingis have their sights set on breaking that record.
Although the 35-year-old Hingis is 6 years older than our nation’s bhabi Sania, they play in perfect synchronization, and are a treat to watch. No wonder fans are going crazy over team ‘SanTina’.
After the victory at Sydney, Martina Hingis will now join Sania Mirza at the top of the WTA rankings as women’s doubles player No. 1. It’s the first time since the year 2000 that Hingis has reached the top spot.
With the Australian Open starting this week, expectations for the duo are high and there’s sure to be some delightful footwork on the court by both these tennis greats.
