After directing smash hits ‘Shame’ and ‘Hunger’, Steven McQueen is back with his latest blockbuster film ‘12 Years a Slave’, an upcoming historical drama scheduled for release this October.
‘12 Years a Slave’ is based on the incredible true story of one man’s fight for survival and freedom. The film follows the story of Solomon Northrup, a free black man living in upstate New York with his wife and children, who is tricked by a job offer, abducted and then sold into slavery in Louisiana.
After 12 years of physical and mental anguish Solomon Northrup finally escaped, and in 1853 wrote a book on which the movie is based. Director Steve McQueen was reportedly really inspired by the book. One thing that really stands out about Northup’s character in the film is that how much of a gentleman he was even in times of such hardship.
The film features an all star cast including Brad Pitt, Michael Fassbender, Benedict Cumberbatch and Paul Giamatti. The character of Solomon Northup is played by renowned British actor Chiwetel Ejiofor, who has won three Golden Globes for his previous work. He also has starred in blockbuster hits ‘2012’ and ‘Salt’ opposite Angelina Jolie.
With ’12 Years a Slave’, McQueen is singing praises of yet another unsung hero who has long-since been forgotten. With other notable releases including ‘Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom’ and ‘Out of the Furnace’, the Oscar-buzz has already begun and ‘12 Years a Slave’ looks to join the conversation.
