All the curly-haired girls out there know and have been through annoying methods on how to tame down the curls, because taking care of curls is not easy! Here is when the ‘Curly Girl Method’ or the CGM plays its amazing part with a goal to give healthier, defined and fuller hair.

If done right, CGM can truly transform the hair, but it requires some hard work and some strictly to be followed dos and don’ts. CGM is basically a guide and a step-wise process to get fabulous hair by using, and avoiding, certain products and styling techniques according to the varying curl types.

Starting the Curly Girl Method

Here is a step-by-step CGM routine for beginners to successfully define their curls.

Step 1: ‘Reset’ Wash Your Hair

The first and kind of obvious step is to wash your hair, but not with any shampoo. Wash them with a sulfate-filled clarifying shampoo. This will easily remove the wax buildup on your scalp and your strands before you start with the CGM process.

Step 2: Cleanse Your Hair

Now, cleanse your hair with a sulfate-free shampoo and massage your scalp for a minimum of 60 seconds and then rinse.

Step 3: Condition Your Hair

Apply a handful of conditioner in your hair and keep on detangling them with either your fingers or a wide-tooth comb. When done, rinse out most of the conditioner, leaving some of it behind.

Step 4: Style Your Hair

Style your hair with some gel into your wet hair from roots to tips.

Step 5: Dry Your Hair

Squeeze the excess water from the hair with a cotton cloth or microfiber towel, and then let them air-dry. Once the hair are completely dry, crunch them with your hands to get rid of the gel coating.

Step 6: Repeat

Repeat steps 2-5 every time you wash your hair.

Things to Avoid in the CGM

Though the steps seem pretty simple, there are a lot of don’ts in this method. In the CGM, you should avoid:

  1. Shampoo – Avoid using the traditional shampoos. You can still use sulfate-free shampoos.
  2. Heating Tools – Heating items like straighteners, curling irons are bad for your hair health.
  3. Sulfates – Use products that are sulfate-free. Sulfates are usually found in shampoos and can suck up the moisture from your hair.
  4. Towel-drying – Towels can rough up the hair cuticles and result in frizz.

Curly Girl Method obviously does not work overnight. It requires a lot of trial-and-error experiments, maybe giving you the feeling of quitting, but don’t! It will take time to crack the right code according to your hair and the right product, but by the end, it will be worthwhile.
