Secretary-General of the United Nation Mr. Ban Ki-moon has nominated Hollywood A-Lister Leonardo DiCaprio as a UN Messenger of Peace. The five-time academy award nominee joins the likes of Angelina Jolie and Emma Watson, who have both represented different organizations within the United Nations.

‘Romeo’ will use his new appointment to campaign environmental issues, with a special focus on climate change. United Nations big-boss Ban Ki-moon has personally invited Leo to address the Climate Summit, being held at the United Nations’ 1st Avenue Headquarters in New York on the 23rd of September. The summit will bring together world leaders to promote climate action for a healthier planet, sustainable economic growth and a better standard of living for everyone.

Mr. DiCaprio was quoted saying, “It’s an honor to accept the role of UN Messenger of Peace on Climate Change and to support the Secretary General in his efforts to address one of the most important issues we face as a global community.” He added, “I feel a moral obligation to speak out at this key moment in human history – it is a moment for action. How we respond to the climate crisis in the coming years will likely determine the fate of humanity and our planet.”

Upon ‘The Wolf’s’ acceptance, Mr. Ban announced “Mr. DiCaprio is a credible voice in the environmental movement, and has a considerable platform to amplify its message, I am pleased he has chosen to add his voice to UN efforts to raise awareness of the urgency and benefits of acting now to combat climate change.”

DiCaprio, a long-standing environmentalist, established the “Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation” in 1998, with the mission of protecting the Earth’s remaining wild sanctuaries and implementing solutions to building a more harmonious relationship between humanity and Mother Nature. He joins 11 other United Nations Messengers of Peace including: Stevie Wonder, Michael Douglas, George Clooney, Charlize Theron and Her Royal Highness Princess Haya of Jordan.

With Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif spending nearly half-a-million dollars of taxpayer money to be in attendance, let’s hope some of ‘The Wolf’s’ altruism rubs off on him.
