It’s about damn time too! Despite taking home the Ballon d’Or five times, Barcelona’s superstar Lionel Messi had never qualified for the La Liga Player of the Month honor for any of the 22 times the award was conferred since its inception in 2013.
The 28-year-old Argentina captain claimed the title after scoring six goals in five La Liga games in the month of January. Messi’s goals include a thrilling hat-trick against Granada, as well as singles against Malaga, Atletico Madrid and Athletic Bilbao.
Barcelona, who are the top La Liga team at the moment, won four out of five of their league matches in the first month of the year.
Messi is only the second Barcelona player to win the award. In November last year, Neymar became the first man from the side to receive the honor.
Real Madrid’s Cristiano Ronaldo has won the award twice, as has Diego Godin, defender for Atletico Madrid. Football fans who have been wondering why Messi never made it before will now be celebrating their idol’s success.
