Tech titan Microsoft kicked things off with an unexpected bombshell this week: it’s decided to acquire LinkedIn.

Given LinkedIn’s tremendous growth — the business-oriented social networking service boasts over 433 million members — it came as no surprise the acquisition was unanimously approved by the Microsoft board.

In a statement Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella was quoted saying, “The LinkedIn team has grown a fantastic business centered on connecting the world’s professionals. Together we can accelerate the growth of LinkedIn, as well as Microsoft Office 365 and Dynamics as we seek to empower every person and organization on the planet.”

The two firms said they had reached a “definitive” agreement that would close later this year, with the support of LinkedIn Chairman and controlling shareholder Reid Hoffman.
