US-based Boom Technology Inc. is a new startup working to make supersonic travel a reality. Supersonic as in 2.6 times the speed of sound.
Founded on the philosophy that “we need to overcome the challenges to supersonic passenger flight, not surrender to them” the 11-man team comprised of pilots, engineers, and hands-on builders is intent on creating a supersonic aircraft affordable for business travel. Their ultimate goal? Routine supersonic flights for everybody!
If successful in pulling this off a Boom aircraft would technically get you from New York to London in 3.5 hours (instead of the usual 7h 10m) and from San Francisco to Tokyo in just 4.5 hours (as opposed to the usual 11).
While the company is still working on their first prototype things are looking good. Richard Branson’s Virgin Group has optioned 10 planes in a deal valued at around $2 billion dollars. The company will also aid Boom with development.
Earlier this week a Virgin spokesperson said, “We can confirm that The Spaceship Company will provide engineering, design and manufacturing services, flight tests and operations and that we have an option on the first 10 airframes. It is still early days and just the start of what you’ll hear about our shared ambitions and efforts.”
