For many of us, motion sickness is what takes away most from the exciting part of travel. Headaches, dizziness, nausea, vomiting and upset stomach can ruin the best of holidays, leaving you wishing you’d just stayed home.

The usual medications available for motion sickness don’t actually cure but only reduce the symptoms. The downside of nearly all these drugs (though the label promises otherwise) is that they make you feel drowsy, which essentially defeats the purpose of living it up while on vacation.

A natural way to counter travel sickness, not to mention a much more effective one is to pack some essential oils in your bag. Taking a whiff of essential oils, or rubbing them directly onto your skin provides quick relief from motion sickness.

These oils, recommended most for traveling, could save your holiday.

1. LavenderIt’s highly recommended for anxiety and depression, so it will keep those panic attacks at bay. Also if you feel the nausea or dizziness coming on, just dab a few drops on a tissue and breathe in – it will help immediately. If settling down in unfamiliar beds keeps you up at night then lavender, a cure for insomnia, will give you a restful slumber.

2. Peppermint. It’s known to relieve fever and muscular pains so is ideal for holidays where you’ll be walking a lot. It also quashes queasiness and soothes a rolling tummy.

3. Patchouli. The scent of patchouli is very strong, so it’s best to dilute it in a carrier oil such as coconut. Patchouli is safe even for young children suffering from travel sickness.

4. Pink Grapefruit. This one’s particularly useful for digestion problems, is a natural mood uplifter, and is known to melt away the unsightly fat build-up under the skin.
