Back in the late 90s, gamers fell in love with Lara Croft who was the protagonist of the ‘Tomb Raider’ titles. She was sexy, smart and could kick butt. After a series of titles, Miss Croft took to Hollywood in the form of her first cinematic outing in ‘Lara Croft: Tomb Raider’. Angelina Jolie was the first to give her take on the iconic character. Surely, the ‘Salt’ star was sexy, strong and eager to take down enemies while raiding tombs.
Jolie returned to the franchise in the sequel ‘Lara Croft Tomb Raider: Cradle of Life’. Both films were commercially successful, but critically panned according to review aggregate site Rotten Tomatoes.
Then publishers Square Enix released a gritty remake titled ‘Tomb Raider’ for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in 2013 that became a huge hit. It went back to the series roots allowing players to rediscover the origins of Lara Croft. With the videogame remake, a film reboot looks imminent.
According to Deadline, MGM and Warner Bros. are collaborating on the upcoming film with Evan Dougherty brought in to pen the script. It is expected to differ from the Angelina Jolie films by keeping it close to the videogame reboot by going back to Lara Croft’s early days. Dougherty has previously worked on Michael Bay’s ‘Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles’ reboot.
Hopefully a return to the big screen for Lara Croft will be as exceptional as her return to console gaming. A videogame sequel is already in development titled ‘Rise of the Tomb Raider’ to be released on current-gen consoles later this year.
