Warner Bros now owns two of the hottest properties in entertainment: DC Comics and Mortal Kombat. The first time both these worlds collided was in 2008 in the hit title ‘Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe’, which released on last-gen consoles the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. Who didn’t enjoy taking Batman down a peg or two courtesy of Scorpion?

The DC Universe was once again featured in the hit title ‘Injustice: Gods Among Us’, which pitted heroes and villains against each other in a bizarro world of death and destruction. While Injustice is today listed among the best beat em up titles of recent times, there are plenty of others worth checking out for a new Point of Difference. Listed below are our recommendations for the Top 5 Best Alternative Titles to ‘Injustice: Gods Among Us’:

1. Soul Calibur V

Bandai Namco’s beloved ‘Soul Calibur’ series has been on all major consoles since the defunct Sega Dreamcast. The fifth edition of the franchise brought back all your favorites: Kilik, Maxi, Siegfried, Mitsurugi, Nightmare and Cervantes in the ultimate beat em up game. Ezio Auditore from the ‘Assassins Creed’ series makes a guest appearance for this one. The best parts of the series have always been the simple controls and signature side-stepping. If you’re talking about the best of the best in the series, ‘Soul Calibur V’ is the one!

2. Mortal Kombat 9

Warner Bros and NetherRealm Studios rebooted the former Midway franchise for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 as ‘Mortal Kombat’ (or Mortal Kombat 9 for those of you keeping count). This is one helluva beat em up title with fluid controls, brutal fatalities and hours upon hours of blood, gore and guts. Scorpion, Sub Zero, Baraka, Johnny Cage, Sonya Blade and Liu Kang all feature, with Kratos the ‘God of War’ an exclusive for PS3 owners.

3. Ultra Street Fighter 4

The update to the bestselling Street Fighter 4 was released earlier this year and saw added elements to an-already stellar title. You get six more stages, new characters: Rolento, Elena, Hugo and Poison, and series debutante Decapre. Add to that the uppercuts from Ryu, the deadly combos from Chun-Li and Guile’s power moves and you’ve got the best Street Fighter game yet!

4. Tekken 6

The creators of Soul Calibur also gave birth to the deadly ‘Tekken’ franchise that has been a mainstay on gaming consoles for years. Tekken 6 is the last but best in the series. The usual suspects are back with the fighting mechanics and added ‘Rage’ system. Heihachi Mishima, Yoshimitsu, Paul Phoenix and Nina Williams return along with dozens of classic fighters. ‘Tekken 6’ was a massive success upon its release and this is what top beat em up titles aspire to be.

5. EA Sports Fight Night Champion

We know what you are thinking. Does a boxing title really belong on this list? Once you play this title you realize just how much this one does… EA Sports’ latest entry in the Fight Night series introduces ‘Full-Spectrum Punch Control’ that allows you to use the analog controls to throw punches. It also features a story mode called ‘Champion Mode’ as well as 51 fighters from the past and present. Evander Holyfield, Mike Tyson, Muhammad Ali, Joe Frazier and George Foreman are but a few of the legends featured in the game. If you want to relive the ‘Rumble in the Jungle’ and ‘Thrilla in Manila’ then this is the way to do it!
