1. The Amityville Horror: Probably the most famous “based on a true story” horror flick ever made. When the Lutz family move into an Ocean Avenue house where the previous owner had murdered his family, they suffer a variety of paranormal phenomena.

2. The Haunting In Connecticut: This 2009 psychological horror flick took its inspiration from the story of Alan and Carmen Snedeker, who moved into a former mortuary and were allegedly tormented – and even sodomized – by demons.

3. Open Water: When a couple gets accidentally abandoned in shark-infested waters, the suspense gets brutal in this 2003 flick, based on the real ordeal of Tom and Eileen Lonergan off the coast of Australia’s Great Barrier Reef.

4. The Conjuring: James Wan’s 2013 freakie deakie super-horror uses the work of real-world paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren as its inspiration. Most notably their 1960’s investigation of a Rhode Island house allegedly haunted by the ghost of a murdered witch.

5. The Exorcist: And our all-time favorite classic about an exorcism performed on a young teenage girl. The Washington Post ran an article about an exorcism that took place in real life in 1949.
